OBJECTIVES OF CLATSOP SOIL & WATER

FISH & WILDLIFE: Promote resource management to enhance fish & water re-evaluate estuary tide gates and improve wildlife conditions, oversee salmon enhancement projects.

WATER QUALITY: Assist Clatsop County landowners in waste abatement, assist the County in EPA mandated management and watershed improvements.

WOODLAND MANAGEMENT: Promote  reforestation to achieve stand improvements, coordinate with Forestry Extension Services.

LAND EROSION: Assist government agencies and private landowners in reducing erosion.

WETLANDS AND DRAINAGE: Address problems of pasture and hayland drainage, diking, tidegates and drainage districts, including  the Skipanon Water Control District.

CONSERVATION EDUCATION: Provide conservation information for landowners, schools and other agencies.

PASTURE AND FARMLAND: Promote improvements in land management through the US Farm Service Agency (formerly ASCS) programs and the Clatsop Economic Development Council's (CEDC) farm produce program.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Support county rural development by assisting and coordinating efforts with the CEDC, the Northwest Oregon Resource Conservation and Development, Inc. (NWRC&D), the Oregon Coastal Zone Management Association (OCZMA) and the Columbia River Estuary Study Taskforce (CREST).

ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2009

SALMON HABITAT ENHANCEMENT and WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

  • Construction of five manure storage buildings for composting of hoarse manure.

INVASIVE NOXIOUS WEED CONTROL:

  •  Control and eradication of Gorse at Clatsop Spit
  • Control and eradication of Purple Loosestrife in the Youngs Bay Estuary
  • Control and eradication of Japanese Knotweed in several watersehds throughout Clatsop County

WORKSHOPS:
Conducted two workshops for small landowners on various land management issues: Riparian area management, Noxious Weed Control, Forest Management, Pasture Management, and Conservation Planning.
