Youngs River Estuary
Livestock fencing and watering project

History
The Youngs River Estuary area is characterized by a wide diked area of  livestock pastures interlaced with sloughs regulated by tidegates in the dikes. Beef cattle traditionally were allowed to use the sloughs for watering.

When the new owners decided to revitalize some disused pastures and raise beef cattle, Clatsop Soil and Water assisted them in finding funding and technical assistance to build fences to keep the cattle out of surrounding sloughs and provide a water source for the cattle.

The Project
Two pastures were fenced to exclude beef cattle from a strip about 20 feet wide next to the sloughs surrounding the pastures. Watering facilites called nose pumps were installed at three locations to provide water to the cattle.
Funding for the project was provided by the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB) and the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS).
